How Battery Swapping Works for Delivery Riders in Delhi NCR

Charging is the reason many fleet operators hesitated over EVs. A rider who has to stop for two or three hours mid-shift is a rider who isn't earning. Battery swapping removes that problem, and Delhi NCR has one of the densest swap networks in the country. Here is how it works in practice for a delivery fleet.

The basic idea

A swappable scooter has a removable battery pack. When it runs low, the rider pulls into a swap station, drops off the drained pack and takes a charged one. The whole exchange takes a couple of minutes, about the same as a petrol refill.

Who pays for the battery

On a dry lease, the battery isn't part of the scooter rent. The rider or the fleet operator takes a subscription directly with a swap network such as Battery Smart or Mooving. Plans differ by network and change from time to time, so check the current options with the network itself. Some fleets pay the subscription centrally, while others have riders pay it out of earnings, the way they would pay for petrol.

Planning around station coverage

Coverage is strongest in dense delivery zones such as South and West Delhi, Noida's sector belts, Gurugram's Sohna Road and Golf Course Road corridors, and Indirapuram and Vaishali in Ghaziabad. It thins out on city edges and in some newer sectors. Before deploying:

  1. Map your dark stores, kitchens or hubs.
  2. Check which swap stations fall within a few minutes of each.
  3. Look at the routes riders take on a typical shift, and where they will be when the battery runs low.
  4. Prefer hubs with two or more nearby stations so a busy station doesn't cost riders time at peak.

Shift planning tips

  • Swap before the peak. Have riders swap just before lunch and dinner rushes, not in the middle of them.
  • Brief new riders. First-week riders often wait too long and end up hunting for a station on a low battery. A one-page station map per hub fixes this.
  • Track swaps per rider. Unusually high swap counts often point to a long route, a heavy load or a scooter that needs a check.

Why it matters for cost

Swapping turns the battery into a running cost that scales with riding, like fuel, rather than a capital cost. That is a big reason a dry lease can come in well below a managed rental for active fleets.
